Anyone ever had a friend or relative who told so many tall stories that you were never sure whether the story was true or fabricated. If can be tragic if it gets too far out of hand. A case in point was a friend who love the idea of being a registered nurse; so much so that they told people that they had been an RN but had had to stop doing their nursing due to a work related injury.

Like many lies, there were more lies needing to be told to cover up the original lie.

The original lie and the huge volume of follow-up lies almost caused a tragedy when an event organiser decided that having an RN would be sufficient cover for a work related Christmas Party.

The organiser was woeful in many respects but the pivotal pain point was that they didn’t check with the ‘qualified’ person about whether they were prepared to take on that responsibility – after all, they had been a qualified and practicing RN.

The party had been well underway – Crowdace Bay was a fabulous spot for a work Christmas Picnic. The kiddies could swim under the watchful eyes of the three Dads while the Mums made sure everyone was well fed, hatted and sunscreened. As the drowsy hours passed the Dads started more chatting and less watching, while the kids became overconfident and boisterous. Luckily, one of the Dads realised that they had all bee chatting for a few minutes and did a quick survey – he thought there were a little short on small wet heads….

Quickly he demanded the attention of the other Dads, asking them if they felt a child was missing and who if might be while he went into the water checking moored boards and canoes. Within seconds they realised that one of the five year old boys was nowhere to be found and quickly […missing?] after that our alert Dad found him caught up, underwater in a rope that had fallen into the water from one of the boards. Quickly he loosened the rope from the child’s leg and ran, carrying the child through the water screaming ‘Get Becky. We need Becky’. Becky’s heart sank – why did they need her? She knew why. She was going to be required to save a life and did didn’t have a clue how she would do it.
