The April meeting

It was great to welcome new members Claire and Linda at the last meeting. The random prompt was ‘Dayve’ and we all had fun with it. Have a look at some of the stories we wrote here. We ended up at Ground Up Espresso in Carrington, which was not a bad venue. We found a particularly sunny spot at the back and enjoyed the afternoon.

Next Meeting

Monday 11th May, Café Inu, Carrington, 12:00

As usual we’ll no doubt be chatting and ordering food until at least 12:30, so come and introduce yourself, or conversely if you can’t make it until a little later don’t worry, drop on by and write with us at about 12:30.

Weekly prompts

This month’s weekly prompts were ‘Early’, ‘Germ’, ‘Stand/Sit’, and ‘Sorry’. They’re also on the April webpage. If you’re not a member but feel inspired, mail us your story and you could be on the website, too! Then come along to the next meeting and meet everyone! Thanks to David as ever for providing us with our prompts.

Local news and competitions

Our local Writers’ Festival director, Rosemary Milsom, has just taken up the somewhat beleaguered position of director for the Adelaide Writers’ Week. One positive aspect must be that she can surely not do worse than the last incumbent, who presided over the total collapse of the event earlier this year. The new director for the Newcastle Writers’ Festival has not been announced.

As usual, there are lots of competitions and writing opportunities closing during the next month (May 2026) on the website. Don’t miss out! Plenty of cash on offer. Oh and glory. And…Amazon vouchers. For a local competition, the Hunter Writers Centre has opened entries to its annual Short Story Competition, though this doesn't close until July, and the entry fee is high at $27.50. Prizes are $3,000, $1,500 and $300.

Happy writing!
