Soul mates
It was a friendship that stretched across decades – from year 3 to the present. He declared his love for her at the age of 14 and they had a brief physical relationship until one night it occurred to her that she just kissed her brother. The thought made her want to puke! Her actual brother was cruel and couldn’t be confided in. She said out loud I can’t do this. I just want us to be friends.
Reluctantly he agreed, but eventually came to the same conclusion. Thereafter they vetted each other’s potential partners – for similarities and differences. She wasn’t a foodie but he was and gave 10 out of 10 to the bistro chef who created delicious soul food for her delectation. It was lost on her, but he and the chef became great mates and she found herself single again.
She still had him, her soul mate. They made time to meet each week and their lives continued.
When the boot was on the other foot, she was brutal in her assessment of his new girlfriend. High maintenance, she didn’t like soul music. No empathy. What are you doing with her?
Mostly now they spent time with each other – without criticisms or complaints.
