Ricci Schwarzler - Soul

The marriage had been short. But deadly. She stood there looking at the bodies. Blank eyes looked at her.

Why had they done this?

The woman had a gunshot wound to her stomach. Her face was in pain. How dramatic. What an end to a life that had no hope, no support, no help, no soul. It was just a life, in constant emotional pain. The torment she endured in the marriage followed her into death. Soul-less eyes stared… No cried out in pain. Pain from the physical pain, but pain from the moment death was about to blast a hole in her life. She knew him as he stood in front of her, holding the gun she could see his tormented eyes. The love they had only three years earlier on their wedding day was gone.

What the woman didn't get to see was the sadness in his eyes as they stared back up at the detective. DCI Chambers knew that look. Sad but lacking in soul, even before death. He had turned the gun on himself. She'd seen this before, the sadness in his eyes. He had just killed the woman he had loved, and all those memories were coming back to him. Only after her death did he see their life for what it was. Why couldn't they both see the damage they had been doing to each other those three years? Why didn't they just leave? Just walk out of the door. Run away.

DCI Chambers new why. Because they thought they loved each other too much and whilst that was true in a way, it was also a lie, a deadly lie. Void of soul, truth and honesty.

Each body staring up to the ceiling tried to tell her their story. It was too late. DCI Chambers turned and walked out of yet another unhappy ending.
